Arcelor manager: Romanian authorities must decide if they want industry or energy services and mediations

Romania may have a higher economic growth rate than in West European countries, but the political decision makers must decide if they want to keep the industry or want 'a country of energy services and mediations,' said Bruno Ribo, managing director of the Arcelor Mittal iron-and-steel plant in Galati (eastern Romania) and chairman of the board of directors, in an interview to Agerpres.

In his opinion, Romania has much potential for developing more and more.

'I think that Romania has much potential. It is Romania's medium-term potential, we can see it, there are other points too that are favourable. Romania has an educational system that delivers specialist education, intelligent, clever people, especially in the field we are interested in, for instance, in automation. We are discussing with other colleagues from other industries and sharing the same point of view. Another positive point Romania has is the important farming potential, which will probably be turned to account in the years to come,' said Ribo.

'Now what political decision makers should do is that, within this general image, they should decide if they keep key industries, important industries. If Romania wants to do it, there are a few steps that must be taken. I think that, structurally, Romania can have a higher economic growth rate than in the countries of Western Europe. The average growth in Europe might be 2-3 percent. If we consider Spain, France, Italy, we shall find 0.5 percent there. Therefore, Romania's economic growth might be higher than the one of other European countries, but it is a decision that must be made within the Romanian society. Do we want to become a country of energy services and mediation or a country that should have an industry too?' the Arcelor Mittal head in Galati asked rhetorically.
