JTI invests EUR 60 million in its Romanian factory

JTI will invest EUR 60 million to upgrade the Romanian factory’s production capacities. As a result of the investment program which will be deployed over the next three years, the volume of cigarettes manufactured in our country will increase, and within the Pipera platform our factory will play a key role in JTI’s sourcing to the European Union Markets. At present approximately 70% of JTI’s manufacturing production is exported to approximately 50 countries.

JTI Manufacturing will be provided with cutting-edge equipment in terms of technology and production standards. This investment represents yet another recognition of the Romanian factory within the JTI group, for its excellence in execution and the efficiency of its team of professionals. We are proud of the trust placed in us and we will continue to work with the same desire to perform and to improve continuously. I am happy to be in Romania during the factory’s development period, in the midst of people determined to succeed, regardless of the difficulties or of the context,” stated Jamie Dunlop (photo), Factory Lead JTI Romania.

JTI Manufacturing is the first company in Romania granted the "5S Best in Class" certification, a basic principle of the Kaizen management system which involves continuous improvement.

In 2012, JTI Manufacturing invested EUR 25 million in the production capacities, which also involved the creation of over 125 new workplaces. Currently, approximately 500 people work in the factory from a total of over 1,200 JTI employees in Romania.

JTI is among the first locally established multinational companies from as early as 1993, investing over EUR 250 million in Romania.

In 2020, the two entities of JTI (manufacturing and trading) transferred to the Romanian state budget over RON 4.77 billion (almost one billion euro), a 12% increase from the taxes paid for 2019. The amount consists of excise, VAT and other taxes, duties and contributions paid so far.

Romania is the third largest European cigarette manufacturer after Germany and Poland. According to the National Institute of Statistics, in 2020, exports totaled EUR over 1.3 bn. Thus, the positive contribution of tobacco in the balance of payments is about one billion euro.
