Only 1 in 5 Romanian SMEs capitalize the export opportunities

Only 20 percent of the Romanian SMEs (1 in 5) capitalize the export opportunities, contributing to 25 percent of the total exports in Romania, according to a study made in September by UPS and Kantar Millward Brown, business-review.eu informs

According to the study, most of the exporting SMEs are in Bucharest and Western developing region, which includes the counties Timis, Arad, Hunedoara and Caras Severin.

The study includes information from 52,000 SMEs that published their last balance sheet in 2016, that have between 10 and 59 employees and a turnover up to EUR 50 million.

Out of the 52,000 analyzed SMEs in the UPS study, most of them are concentrated in Bucharest-Ilfov area (23.4 percent), followed by North-West area (14.4 percent), Center, South-Muntenia (11.1 percent), North-East (10.8 percent), West (9 percent) and South-West (6.7 percent).

The SMEs generate 35 percent of the overall turnover made by the active companies in Romania. Most of the SMEs that export are in the manufacturing industry, in trade industry, transportation, IT&C and agriculture.

„The SMEs that export register a higher growth in revenues and are more confident in the future. An UPS study at European level published at the beginning of  this year shows that half of the SMEs that export registered a growth in revenues in the last three years. UPS helps Romanian SMEs to access and benefit from trans-boarders opportunities, both in Europe and worldwide, via our global network, ” said Jim Kearney, managing director UPS Romania, Hungary and Greece.

In 2016 UPS introduced a new cargo flight segment at Cluj-Napoca, connecting it to the air hub in Köln, Germany, and improved the transit time in the ground network that connects Romania with the rest of Europe. Once with the new cargo flight segment, UPS expands the maximum period of  deliveries takeover for the SMEs that want to access the international markets. These investments are part of the investments plan of USD 2 billion until 2019, through which the European network of UPS will become faster.

“Any additional assets that we invest in in Pan-European area improves the services for Romanian customers. And one of those services is the ground network. We have taken one of the most significant project: to improve ground services, to provide the same cost-value through a better service, as there are more and and more companies which want more value in this field,” added Kearney.

Also the e-commerce has become very important nowadays. According to the 2017 UPS study on the online shoppers, 71 percent of European online shoppers have purchased from an international retailer. Millennials make 24 percent of their online purchases via a smartphone.

The company is active for 110 years on the market. Since 2008 UPS has its own subsidiary and employees in Romania.
