Calafat-Vidin Bridge to be completed in 2011

The second bridge over the Danube River between Romania and Bulgaria will be completed toward mid-2011, Deputy Bulgarian Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications Ivailo Moskovski told Agerpres on Wednesday.

Moskovski welcomed on Wednesday in Sofia state secretary with the Romanian Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Eusebiu Pistru.

The two officials say they are very satisfied with their conversations, saying they managed to solve some technical problems that will allow the works to continue. Moskovski said that the two want to show that they can successfully cooperate by successfully completing the bridge project.

'The first time I met Mr. Pistru was in Staockholm, where there are more than 20 bridges, so I would say that two bridges between our countries are not enough at all,' said Moskovski, adding that bilateral cooperation should continue with other projects.

The problems faced by the two countries in relation to the Calafat-Vidin bridge project are similar, the two officials said, mentioning to the point the expropriation of land on the two banks of the river. On the Romanian bank, expropriations have been 70 percent completed, according to Pistru. Work there is now being conducted on the related infrastructure and creating connections between the future bridge and road as well as railroad networks of the two countries.

Pistru also said that the meeting on Wednesday in Sofia was a positive one.

We hope the Calafat-Vidin Bridge will lead to a development of these two areas that are now poorly developed in terms of economy. We are also considering continuing investment in these parts of the Danube,' said Pistru.

He added that relations between Romania and Bulgaria are excellent now.

'We have noticed that the new Bulgarian Government, including my counterpart, are ready for excellent cooperation with Romania and this is also valid for us,' said Pistru.
