Eurostat: Almost half of in-hospital deaths registered in Romania in 2013 could have been avoided

Almost half (49.4 percent) of in-hospital deaths at ages under 75 registered in Romania in 2013 could have been avoided in the light of current medical knowledge and technology; this is the highest percentage recorded in the European Union member states, shows data published on Tuesday by the European statistical office (Eurostat).

At the opposite end, with a share of avoidable deaths below 30 percent are France (23.8 pct), Denmark (27.1pct), Belgium (27.5pct) and the Netherlands (29.1pct).

According to Eurostat, 1.7 million people under 75 died in 2013 in the European Union. Of these, approximately 577,500 or 33.7 percent can be considered premature, because they could have been avoided with the current medical knowledge and technologies.

In 2013, heart attacks accounted by far for the largest share of potentially avoidable deaths in the EU (184,800 or 32pct of total avoidable deaths of persons aged less than 75); they were followed by strokes (93,900 or 16 pct), colorectal cancers (67,000 or 12pct), breast cancers (50,800 or 9pct), hypertensive diseases (28,700 or 5pct) and pneumonia (24,100 or 4pct).
