Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili started an official visit to Romania

President Klaus Iohannis welcomed, on Wednesday at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace, Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili, in which context he encouraged strengthening the partnership with Georgia. 

The two officials discussed about the stage and prospects of consolidating the political relation between Romania and Georgia, including in the context of celebrating this year 25 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. 

"President Klaus Iohannis highlighted the excellent Romanian-Georgian political relations, exemplified including through a sustained dynamics of high-level political contacts, together with Romania's constant support for Georgia's European and Euro-Atlantic bid, and for regulating the extended conflicts concerning the Georgian separatist regions based on international law, with the observance of the Georgian state's sovereignty and territorial integrity," the Presidential Administration informs in a press statement. 

According to the source, the head of state encouraged strengthening the Romanian-Georgian partnership, including by stimulating relevant connectivity on a regional level, through the development of economic, energy and transport, meant to capitalise on the geographic proximity and the direct connection on the Black Sea between the two countries. 

At the same time, President Klaus Iohannis appreciated Georgia's progress in implementing the Association Agreement with the European Union, as well as the contribution of this country to the Euro-Atlantic security, including through its participation in NATO missions and operations, particularly in Afghanistan. 

"The Georgian Prime Minister voiced a special appreciation for the solidity of the bilateral relation, standing on an excellence level, and addressed thanks to Romania's President for Romania's firm support for the efforts to join the EU and NATO, as well as for Georgia's territorial integrity," the Presidential Administration shows. 

Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili also said that Romania is perceived in Georgia, both on a political level and on the citizens' level, as being the closest EU state to the country, and underscored the commitment of the Government he is heading to continue the reform process in a European spirit. 

The Georgian official voiced his determination to intensify the economic cooperation with Romania, including through organising a new meeting of the joint Commission in the area, in June, as well as business forums, and through the promotion of the connection projects concerning the freight and hydro carbons transport, of interest for both states, over the Black Sea. 

The two high dignitaries also discussed the security situation in the region, highlighting the strategic importance of the Black Sea and the relevance of NATO's increased involvement, in accordance with the decisions adopted on an allied level.
