President Klaus Iohannis welcomed on Wednesday at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace, the president of the Bundestag, Norbert Lammert, context in which the former stressed that Romania is a deeply pro-European state, which supports an ambitious project for relaunching the EU.

According to a press release of the Presidential Administration, the two high officials tackled the main issues on the cooperation agenda between Romania and Germany, but also Europe's future and the recent developments in our country as regards the rule of law.

President Klaus Iohannis stressed the strategic importance of bilateral relations, showing that deepening the dialogue will allow the entry into a higher stage and a mutual support on topics of interest, both within the EU, as well as regionally and internationally.

"The two senior officials discussed in detail the political situation in Europe in the context of electoral processes underway in several EU member states, including Germany, and stressed the necessity of preserving the pro-European governing orientation, at the end of these processes. The importance of combating, in this context, the extremist, populist and anti-European trends and forces was also put in prominence," the release reads.

The source says that President Iohannis highlighted the particular relevance of the European politicians' explanations regarding the added value of the European Union for the European citizens. He also drew attention to the harmful trend of blaming the EU for domestic policy shortcomings.

"President Klaus Iohannis stressed the need to preserve democratic values and strengthen the rule of law, including confidence in parliamentary democracy and political parties, which assume a particular responsibility in this regard," the release reads.

In turn, the President of the German Parliament mentioned that EU is "the best response to globalization, being an illusion that some politicians spread that sovereign competencies' recovery could be possible by weakening the EU."

In this context, the head of state reiterated that Romania is a deeply pro-European country that upholds an ambitious project to relaunch the EU.

The two officials discussed about other topics on the European agenda, including the issue of refugees, president Iohannis reiterating Romania's position in this case.

"With regard to the domestic situation in our country, the German partners have expressed their full support for continuing the anti-corruption efforts and strengthening the rule of law, as well as great appreciation for the Romanian citizens' civic, deeply pro-European spirit," the press release further mentions.
