Iohannis met his Egyptian counterpart: Joint Economic, Scientific and Technical Co-operation Committee to be held in Cairo February 26-28
Romania's President Klaus Iohannis on Saturday met his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on the sidelines of the EU-League of Arab States summit, held in Sharm El-Sheikh,Egypt.
According to a presidential administration's press statement, Iohannis rated as excellent and solid the relationship between the two countries, as Egypt is one of Romania's traditional friends in the region and an essential factor in ensuring regional stability and security.
He thanked his Egyptian counterpart for the very good organization of the EU-LAS Summit, showing that the meeting is of special importance.
The two heads of state expressed their interest in and determination to deepen bilateral relations, on all dimensions of mutual interest, with emphasis on the economic dimension. President Iohannis voiced satisfaction with the rising level of bilateral trade, which reached 208 million US dollars in 2018, with Egypt becoming Romania's main trading partner in the region.
Iohannis expressed his conviction that the next round of the Joint Economic, Scientific and Technical Co-operation Committee, to be held in Cairo February 26-28, will play an important role in the development of economic and sectoral co-operation between the two countries.
According to the Presidential Administration, the Egyptian president thanked Romania for good co-operation under regional and multilateral frameworks and expressed its special appreciation for the relationship with Romania over time, including at EU level. He emphasised that there is a strong relationship that Egypt wants to develop even further.
The two heads of state agreed to further enhance the quality of the presidency of the EU Council held by Romania and the presidency of the African Union held by Egypt going forward. The two officials also discussed a series of challenges at regional level, with emphasis on combating terrorism and illegal migration.
President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi welcomed an invitation from Klaus Iohannis to visit Romania.
