Melescanu: Romania preoccupied by Ukraine situation

Romania is preoccupied by what is happening in Ukraine because any instability places this country in an unsecure geographic area and because there is a minority living in the area, the director of the Foreign Intelligence Service (SIE), Teodor Melescanu declared on Tuesday.

“It is not fear. Romania is undoubtedly concerned by what is happening in the vicinity of our borders from two points of view – firstly because any instability, any uncertainty would place us in an unsecure area, which means more expensive credits which Romania greatly needs. Secondly, because we also have a minority living in these areas and we are preoccupied but we are not afraid. It is not a wish to intervene in these matters , but our wish to promote our stand concerning the preservation of state, unity and every people’s right to choose the path it considers fit in matters of foreign policy,” Melescanu said in Parliament, at the end of the meeting of the Special Commission of the Chamber of Deputies and Senate exerting parliamentary control on SIE activity.

In his turn the chairman of SIE commission, Mihaita Calimente declared that Romania is interested in Ukraine’s stability, the Romanian minority in that country and what is happening in Moldova.

“What is happening in Moldova, where elections are held this year, is very important and we wish an impeccable European progress for Moldova, without domestic conflicts and separatist tendencies,” the SIE commission chairman said.
