Natural growth of Romania's population was a negative 8,019 in December 2017

  • In  December  2017  the  number  of  births  decreased  and  the  number  of  deaths  increased compared to November 2017.

  • The number of marriages dropped and  the number of divorces  slightly  rose in December 2017 compared to November 2017.

  • The  number  of  deaths  of  children  under  1  year  increased  in  December  2017  compared  to November 2017

The natural growth of Romania's population was a negative 8,019 in December 2017, as live births stood at 15,127 and the number of deaths was 23,146, shows data released on Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

According to INS, the number of December live births was by 192 lower compared to the previous month and the number of dead infants aged less than 1 year was 105, by 12 higher than in November 2017.

The number of marriages registered in December 2017 was 6,589, by 1,023 less from November the same year, while the number of divorces pronounced under final court rulings and in compliance with Law No. 202/2010 was 2,751, by 304 more than in the month before.

The number of live births in December 2017 was by 839 lower y-o-y and the number of deaths was by 1,456 higher.

According to INS, the natural increase in population was negative both in December 2017 (-8,019 people), and in December 2016 (-8,636).

The number of marriages registered in December 2017 was by 1,406 higher than in the same month of 2016, while the number of divorces pronounced under final court rulings and in compliance with Law No. 202/2010 was by 400 more this December than in the same month of 2016.
