New things about Romania published in the press from the Wikileaks cables

The documents that refer to Romania attributed to the Embassy of the United States of America to Bucharest obtained by Wikileaks, were published starting Sunday evening by Hotnews.ro.
The cables, dating from 2004 – 2009 refer to the political situation in Romania. Thus, among others, the cables talk about the meeting of president Basescu with the FBI director, about the suspension of the head of state, about the relations of Mircea Geoana with Moscow and with Sorin Ovidiu Vintu. At the same time, the cables refer to a tensioned discussion between Geoana and Basescu about Nastase files, about the Viorel Hrebenciuc’ s attempts to stop the suspension of the president, about compromising files regarding Dan Voiculescu, about Vasile Blaga and his comments regarding the alliance of PDL and PSD in 2009, about organised crime in Romania or the problems at the Cernavoda power station.

For example, according to a cable in 2007, the former leader of PSD Mircea Geoana told the Americans that he met twice with president Basescu before he was suspended and the party « would have killed him » if they knew.

Another subject of the cables is connected to acquisition by Romania of the multitasking planes for the Army, saying that Traian Basescu does not consider buying European planes. For this they also speak about the involvement of the former minister of defence Teodor Melescanu. The cables refer to the kidnapping of the Romanian journalists in Iraq as well as the problem of international adoptions.

According to the Wikileaks cables, a top of the tycoons in Romania and the local important people would include Dinu Patriciu, Dan Voiculescu, Sorin Ovidiu Vântu, Ioan Niculae, Gigi Becali, Attila Verestoy.

The ambassador of the United States of America to Bucharest Mark H.Gitenstein refused to comment, on Monday the content of the cables published by Wikileaks, limiting to saying « they speak by themselves ».

« You have the cables, read them yourselves. They speak for themselves. I won’t comment » the American ambassador said.
In a press release of the US Embassy to Bucharest it is said that « The State Department does not comment about the materials, including confidential documents which have possibly got into the press ».

« We cannot pronounce about the authenticity of the documents in the press. It is a standard answer which is given everywhere in the world » the Diplomatic Mission of the US says.
