Romania condemns the chemical weapons attack that took place in Syria, Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu said in Craiova on Friday.

"We, as a state, condemn the chemical weapons attach that took place a few days ago. These things must be punished and everything resulting from our engagements as NATO member state will be observed. However, attacks of the kind of what happened some days ago, which have nothing to do with any international rule, with absolutely anything, must be punished," Grindeanu said after a visit to the Ford Plant in Craiova.

Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu pointed out that he had on Friday morning a discussion on this topic with National Defence Minister Gabriel Les and with Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu.

"At the shortest, the Foreign Affairs Ministry will issue an official release [on this topic]," Grindeanu said.

Asked if the US informed Romania and the NATO partners in any way that it was going to fire cruise missiles at a military target in Syria, the PM pointed out that he is "convinced" of it.

"I am convinced that the NATO partners and not only those of the US — we are talking about military issues — were informed, all procedures were observed. I have no doubt from this point of view," Grindeanu also said.

The PM pointed out that he encourages the political dialogue and the dialogue leading to peace restoration in Syria.
