President Basescu sends message of congratulations to Israel president-elect

Romanian President Traian Basescu sent a message on Tuesday congratulating Israel's President-elect Reuven Rivlin on being elected to the position.

'I have the special pleasure of addressing you warmest congratulations for your election to the high position of the president of the State of Israel and I wish you utter success in the actions you are going to make in exercising the mandate that has been entrusted you', Basescu's message says.

'I am fully convinced that the exceptional experience you have gained in your political career - notably having been the Knesset president two times - will be capitalized on during your term for increasing the security and prosperity of Israel's citizens. At the same time, I voice hope that your term-in-office will mark significant progress with respect to finding a solution for long-lasting peace in the Middle East', the Romanian leader added.

'As regards the relations between Romania and Israel, I wish to assure you of the firm will of the Romanian state for deeper political dialogue at all levels and deeper cooperation in areas of common interest. It gives me pleasure to recall the state visit I paid to Israel in the second half of January and I hope you, in turn, will back the projects agreed on that occasion,' Basescu said.

Right-wing candidate Reuven Rivlin was elected President of Israel on Tuesday by secret vote of the Parliament (Knesset); he is the 10th Israeli head of state and replaces Shimon Peres.
