Streinu Cercel: There is 99 percent chance of no Ebola infection case in Romania

There is a 99 percent chance the patient admitted to the Matei Bals Institute tests negative for Ebola, the manager of the 'Matei Bals' Institute, Prof. PhD Adrian Streinu Cercel told a press conference referring to the patient suspected of having contracted a viral infection.

'We have examined step by step all the epidemiological and clinical data of the patient and we found elements having very little to do with a possible Ebola infection. There is practically more than 90 percent, 99 percent chance he turns negative for the Ebola virus, but there are still other possible infections, including those originated from Nigeria. We are monitoring the circulation of these hemorrhagic viruses - it's not just Ebola - and this is the year with the highest number of cases reported in this area,' Adrian Streinu Cercel said.

Health Minister Nicolae Banicioiu said that at this moment, there is no confirmation of Ebola virus infection in the case of the male patient admitted to the 'Matei Bals' National Institute of Infectious Diseases in Bucharest.

'At this moment, there is no confirmation of Ebola infection in the case of the patient admitted to Matei Bals. Samples are being collected and they will be sent to the relevant institute in Germany,' Banicioiu told Realitatea TV news channel on Sunday.

He confirmed that the man's family, namely his wife and his 15-year-old son were put in quarantine at home.

ForMin: No reported cases of Ebola-infected Romanians in West Africa

The Romanian embassies in West Africa have received no requests for assistance for the repatriation of Romanian citizens and were neither informed about possible cases of Romanian citizens infected with the Ebola virus in the West African states, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) announced on Sunday in a release.

'Romania's diplomatic missions in West Africa sped up investigation into the existence of possible cases of Ebola-infected Romanian citizens, who are located in the affected areas and neighbouring states, making every effort to be provided with concrete information, exclusively checked by Romania's honorary consuls in Africa. We point out that Romania's embassies in West Africa stay in contact with the Romanian nationals who announced their presence in the area, as well with those voluntarily registered with Romania's diplomatic missions,' the release reads.

MAE is constantly kept up-to-date with the developments in the Ebola outbreak in Africa, by its diplomatic missions in the region.

'Romania's embassies in West Africa constantly take part in many working meetings on this topic, alongside the EU partners. In addition, MAE is in close touch with the local authorities in this area,' the source underscores.
