Survey: For 88% Romanian businessmen, the issue of corruption represents an obstacle for the development of the companies

Almost 88% of the representatives of the business environment in Romania consider that the issue of corruption represents an obstacle for the development of companies, shows a survey regarding the attitude of the European business environment against corruption in the EU, published on Monday by the European Commission on the occasion of the International Day for Anti-corruption.

This shows that the level of corruption is less spread in the EU than in 2013. ‘The results show a dropping trend, but an important number (63%) of the enterprises consider that corruption is widely spread, a drop from 75% in 2013. As regards the situation in Romania, 97% of the representatives of the business environment consider that the issue of corruption is spread at national level’ the European Commission says.

More than that, 88% of them see corruption as an obstacle for the normal development of the companies, as compared to the European average of 37%.

At European level, the business environment is sceptikal with regard to the way in which corruption is approached, 51% of the interviewees considering that it is unlikely that the corrupted people or the enterprises with such tendencies be presented to the police or the prosecutors.

‘Corruption undermines democracy and the rule of law, the basis of our society. In time, its influence increases the inequalities and undermines social cohesion. As Union, we made important progress along the years, but it is more to be done. We will continue to collaborate with the national authorities, with the international organizations, with the civil society and the private sector to eradicate corruption’ says the commissionaire for domestic affairs, Ylva Johansson.

The European Union made progress in the fight against corruption with new norms regarding the protection of integrity protectors, the combating of money laundry and access of the authorities for law observance to financial information, as well as with regards to the protection of the financial interests of the Union, the setting up of the European Prosecutor’s Office respectively. ‘The commission will continue to consolidate its activity with regards to this issue in cooperation with all parties. Fight against corruption will be, similarly, a key-element in the new cycle for the revision of the rule of law’ the EC shows.
