Under new bill, travel documents for Romanians abroad to be issued in electronic format
The Chamber of Deputies on Wednesday passed a bill under which travel documents issued by diplomatic missions or consular offices of Romania to Romanian citizens abroad in order to return to the country can also be issued electronically with a qualified electronic signature.
There were 227 ayes and 32 abstentions.
Under the new bill, "a travel document is a document that is issued in print or in electronic format by the diplomatic missions or consular offices of Romania to Romanian citizens abroad who no longer possess a valid travel document, so that they can return to the country."
The MPs introduced a new article that says that "the travel document issued in electronic format is signed with a qualified electronic signature and regarded as an authentic document."
"Within 180 days of the entry into force of this law, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs develops the technical capabilities of diplomatic missions and consular offices of Romania for the electronic appointmentof Romanian citizens in order to access consular services, as well as for receiving and recognising certificates and other documents in an electronic format issued by public authorities in the member states of the European Union or the European Economic Area."
The Chamber of Deputies is the decision-making body in this case.
