Healthcare: Cardiovascular diseases - main death cause in Romania

In Romania, cardiovascular diseases represent the main death cause, with about 60% of total deaths recorded at national level, that is  three times more than deaths produced by cancer. Moreover, death caused by cardiovascular diseases is the main cause why life expectancy in Romania is by ten years shorter than in EU, said Dragos Vinereanu, the president of the Romanian Cardiology Society.

He pointed out that the situation is closely linked to financing the health system, which is one of the lowest in EU.

“These are 2014 data. In 2018 things have improved somehow, but the GDP percentage granted to the health system is one of the lowest in Europe. Although Romania’s population dropped between 2000 and 2016 by 15%, the total number of deaths by cardiovascular diseases dropped by 3% for women and 8% for men. In other words, we find out that the number of deaths caused by cardiovascular diseases has increased in the last 16 years,” according to the president of SRC.

He said that cardiovascular diseases are “killing”more young people at the age of 30 for women and 39 for men.
