Healthcare: More than 80,000 new cancer cases diagnosed every year
President Klaus Iohannis believes that the public healthcare system must be properly funded and better organised given that, every year, in Romania there are more than 80,000 new cancer cases diagnosed and more than 50,000 deaths are caused by the disease.
"Today we mark the World Cancer Fight Day, a cruel disease that claims millions of lives around the globe. At EU level, cancer is the leading cause of illness and the second cause of death, and in Romania there are over 80,000 new cancer cases diagnosed and more than 50,000 deaths every year. This situation must be countered, first of all through adequate funding of the [health care] system and better organizing. Early diagnosis and a proper treatment can help avoid death from cancer in a significant number of patients," a message posted on President Iohannis' Facebook page Thursday read.
Additionally, Iohannis stated that Romania is joining the campaign run by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), whose main purposes are to reduce the number of cancer cases, successful treatment and increasing quality of life for as many patients as possible.
