Healthcare: Romania is the second country in Europe for antibiotic consumption

Romania is the second country in Europe for the consumption of antibiotics with 600,000 Romanians undergoing such a treatment, Gabriel Popescu, councillor of the health minister declared on Friday at a press conference.

“There is a direct connection between the consumption of antibiotics and bacteria resistance. The higher antibiotic consumption is , the more the bacteria resistance to antibiotics. This year we made more steps to limit the size of problems. Data communicated today by the European Centre for Disease Control are for 2015. As for results, we are the second country after Greece for antibiotics consumption per 1,000 inhabitants. The daily level is 3.3% which means 600,000 Romanians who are treated with antibiotics daily. This high level is reflected in the bacteria resistance level to antibiotics,” Popescu explained.

He pointed out that there are “steps to be made”to limit the transmission of germs from one patient to another in hospitals.

“WHO says that 40-50% of all prescriptions for antibiotics are either unjustified or eventually wrong. We want to introduce more notions referring from the judicious use of antibiotics and infection control in medical units since college and then in the years preparing for residency to have time devoted to those activities. Information is needed later on too and it should be ensured for physicians throughout their careers,” Popescu added.

WHO marks the “World Awareness Week on Antibiotic consumption and resistance”, for the promotion of responsible antibiotic consumption only when they have therapeutic efficiency, in order to limit or prevent growing resistance to antibiotics.

To limit resistance to antibiotics, WHO recommends: use of antibiotics only with medical recommendation, following drug administration as prescribed by physicians, not to offer antibiotics to someone else, prevention of possible bacteria infections by washing hands, preparing food in hygienic conditions, vaccination and avoiding contact with infected persons.
