Romania needs exploration and exploitation of shale gas in national energy strategy ( expert)

The exploration and exploitation of the shale gas should start immediately and we could talk about a viable energy strategy for Romania for a long period of time, stated in a conference Niculae Napoleon Antonescu professor and honorary dean of the Oil and Gas University in Ploiesti. “ We cannot talk about an energy strategy of Romania without thinking of putting to value the non-conventional sources. The exploration and exploitation of the non-conventional gas in Romania should start immediately. The exploration could last some years, from 5 to 6 years. We have to know, first how to make correct exploration and we should be happy that there are partners who want to invest. The Romanian state has little chance to invest not only in this domain, but in other domains as well in the Romanian industry” Antonescu said.

At the end of February, minister of Economy Varujan Vosganian stated that Romania could start the exploration of shale gas to know at what stage we are, so that later they could go on exploiting it with the help of modern technology. Over 7,000 citizens protested, last month, in Barlad ( the eastern part of the country) against the exploration of shale gas through hydro fracture by the American company Chevron.

In 2012 Romania concessioned to the American group Chevron surfaces with a total of 870,000 ha. Even so, Chevron suspended its prospection and gas production operations in Romania. In the meanwhile other companies, including Petrom, Romgaz, MOL, Sterling and East-West became interested in the opportunities in Romania.
The Atlantic Council and the Romanian National Committee of the World Energy Council organised, between 11 – 12 March in Bucharest the conference “ European Unconventional Gas Developments: The Science, Technology and Best Practices”.
