2013 - best year in history of stock exchange, after peak in 2007
The public offerings by state-owned companies have turned 2013 into the best year in the history of the local stock exchange in the past six years, after the peak recorded in 2007, before the economic crisis. BET-C, the general index of the Bucharest Stock Exchange Bucharest (BVB) that monitors the trend of the listed shares' quotations, recorded in 2013 a 20% advance, new records of the daily trades and of the monthly ones have been reached, the position of BVB's Director General has been taken over by the former head of the Warsaw Stock Exchange, and three successful public offerings by some state-owned companies have been recorded.
The last trading session in 2013 was held on December 30 and all stock indices closed the year with increases between 6% and 26%. Compared with end-2012, the overall market index, BET-C, closed on the rise by 20% to 3,344.38 points, the BET main index closed by 26% higher, to 6,493.79 points, and the BET-FI index of the SIFs increased by 23.3%, to 31,291.82 points.
The BVB's capitalization at end-2013 stands at almost 30 billion euros, up by 36% compared with end-2012, when it stood at slightly over 22 billion euros.
The initial primary public offering for the sale of 10% in National Company Nuclearelectrica was held September 9 to 20, 2013 and it was successfully completed. Nuclearelectrica got then 281.877 million lei from the stock market.
Romgaz is the second company with majority state company whose initial public offer (IPO) has been held this year (from October 22 to 31), after Nuclearelectrica, having been included in the calendar of privatizations through the stock exchange, announced by the Romanian Government. The IPO through which the state sold 15% in Romgaz started on October 22 and ended on October 31, 2013, and the Romanian state thus obtained a total amount of 1.734 billion lei (390.9 million euros, 534.63 million dollars).Romgaz's IPO represents the first public offering of a Romanian state-owned company in London.
Also held this year has been the secondary public offering of Transgaz, listed on the BVB in 2008.
In early July, the BVB Board appointed Ludwik Sobolewski, the former CEO of the Warsaw Stock Exchange, as the BVB's Director General.
