2019 draft budget based on optimistic figures

The finance minister declared on Tuesday that the 2019 budget takes into account a GDP of over 1,000 billion lei, with an economic growth of 5.5%.

“For the first time GDP exceeds 1,000 billion lei, 1,022 billions estimated for next year. We are writing history,”said minister Teodorovici in a TV show at Antena 3.

Eugen Teodorovici did not present a figure for the budget deficit, but said it will be “lower” than this year.

“Next year must be an investment year,” Teodorovici continued, pointing out that there will be a 15% budget increase for education and over 8% for health.

Talks within CSAT to resume on December 19, will focus on budgets of intelligence services and defence and will not delay the approval of the budget, the minister said. He insisted on the need to clarify all aspects, offering as example the formula of allocating money for local structures. He admitted that the draft budget can be modified following talks with coalition partners or in parliament.

GDP taken into account for 2019 budget is 1,022 billion lei. This year’s budget is estimated at 950 billion lei.

Romania's GDP is estimated at nearly RON950 billion this year.
