500 Romanian, American, French and Italian troops at Dacian Spring exercise in Medgidia, Smardan

Approximately 500 Romanian, American, French and Italian troops participated in the command exercise Dacian Spring 2023 - DASP23, held between May 8 and 12, in units of the Romanian Land Forces in Medgidia, Constanta county, and Smardan, Galati county.

According to a press release from the Defense Ministry (MApN), the troops involved in the exercise are part of the Multinational Command of the South-East Division/HQ MND-SE, the Multinational Command of the South-East Brigade/HQ MN BDE-SE, the French Rapid Reaction Brigade, Brigade 1 (US) of Battle/1 (US) BCT, NATO Battle Group from Romania, with France as Framework Nation / ROU BG (FRA FN), NATO Battle Group from Bulgaria with Italy as Framework Nation / BGR BG (ITA FN).

The purpose of Dacian Spring 2023 was to validate the rapid real-time deployment of the Command Post of the French Brigade in the South-East operations area and the integration process, by testing NATO and national procedures, of the forces under the command and control of the Command Multinational of the South-East Division, states the quoted source.

The Chief of the Defense Staff, General Daniel Petrescu, appreciated that the exercise confirmed the high reaction capacity of the NATO Battle Groups in Romania and Bulgaria and the ability of the Multinational Command of the Southeast Division to conduct a defensive operation in its area of responsibility. "It was a collective effort, which carries the prerequisites for success," said General Petrescu, quoted in the press release.

Also, the commander of the Multinational Command of the Southeast Division, Major General Dorin Toma, emphasized that "the exercise represents an opportunity for all participating structures to test the level of interoperability, and the experience gained as a result of it will contribute to the improvement of the planning and execution of the activities next".
