A deficit of almost 500 million euro in the commerce with food produce at seven months: exports continue to drop

The deficit of Romania in the commerce with food reached 498.4 million euro in the first seven months of 2016 growing seven times against the level of the same period in 2015, 69.4 million euro respectively, according to the preliminary data centralised by the ministry of agriculture and rural development (MADR).

In the period 1 January -31 July 2016 Romania’s exports were supported by wheat, tobacco, corn and rape seeds while the top of imports was dominated by pork, bakery produce, pastries and biscuits food produce and sugar.

According to the MADR data the exports of food dropped in the first seven months of this year with 2.32% against the similar period of 2015, with a total of 2.989 billion euro, while imports increased by 11.42% up to the value of 3.487 billion euro.

Thus, in the mentioned period there exported 3.19 million tons of wheat, worth 537.9 million euro, 30,000 tons of cigarettes (459 million euro), 1.363 million tons of corn for which they received 327.1 million euro.

At the same time, there were exported in the EU and third countries 666,600 tons of rape seeds which generated income of 246.9 million euro, 1.053 million tons of rice ( 154.4 million euro) sun flower seeds – 174.400 tons (119.5 million euro) as well as live animals such as sheep or goats with income of 92.6 million euro.

On the other hand, pork is first in the top of imports for the first seven months of the year with a quantity of 101,600 tons in the first seven months of this year worth 163.5 million euro, against the 92,900 tons imported along the same period of 2015, worth 145.8 million euro.

Imports of bakery, pastries and biscuits had as a total 66.800 tons (133 million euro) food products – 33,200 tons (124 million euro), sugar – 301,600 tons (113,2 million euro) tobacco – 23,200 tons (112,4 million euro) and coffee (108,1 million euro).

Romania closed extra the years 2013 and 2014 in the commerce with food with a plus of 300 million euro, 500 million euro respectively after 20 years when imports were over exports of food and agricultural products but in 2015 it came back on deficit with a minus of 89 million euro.
