Analysis: Business in the technological sector will reach in 2020 the level of 55 billion lei

Business in the technological sector of Romania, from research-development in engineering to automated equipment and software will reach this year the level of 55 billion lei, figure higher than double against that of 2010, according to an analysis made by experts of Frames and the Industrial Academy.

According to them, the Romanian industry is on the point of strategic decisions and has to take a step towards robotics and digitization, towards Factory 4.0 in accordance with the major changes at international level.


The number of companies working in these domains, from the fabrication of industrial equipment and research/development in engineering, to software, consultancy, retail of components and computing equipments has increased significantly over the last 10 years, from 13,876 in 2010 to 32,205 in 2018.

Due to the development of economy, business in the technological sector advanced from 26 billion lei in 2010 to 51.1 billion lei in 2018. Profitability has followed the same trend, advancing from 1,56 billion lei in 2010 to 5.41 billion lei in 2018.

According to experts, after 2019 when the preliminary results show a significant advance, 2020 seems to be the best year for the technological business of Romania, with business estimated at over 55 billion lei and a profit over the level of 6 billion lei.

From the point of view of the evolution of social capital, statistics data show a significant advance over the last ten years, from 6.25 billion lei in 2010 to 14,1 billion lei in 2018.

‘The evolution of the business in this sector is a dynamic one, supported by a demand for products and services growing every year. The technological solutions for the auto industry, for the manufacturing sector, agriculture and constructions are most important. Supported by the dynamics of the software sector which offers more and more customized solutions, the Romanian economy takes significant steps towards Industry 4.0 towards robotics and process digitisation’ Marius Haratau, manager of Industrial Academia says.


Bucharest is in the foreground with 10,086 active companies in the domain, followed by Cluj county with 3,251 and Timis with 1,884 companies. Next is Ia?i (1.526), Ilfov (1,433) Bihor (999), Prahova (959), Constan?a (865) and Sibiu (717).


At the other end are the counties Mehedin?i (128), Ialomi?a (137), Giurgiu (147) Tulcea (162), Cara? Severin (160) and Teleorman (167).

According to statistics, over 32,000 companies are in the area of micro-entreprises, in most cases startups and only approximately 1,700 are part of the small enterprises, medium and big depending on the turnover.

The average turnover, at the level of the whole sector was in 2018 of 1.5 million lei and the average of the net profit was 159,502 lei.

The analysis Frames&Academia Industriala shows that the 32,205 active companies in 2018 hired, as a whole, 151,003 employees, a double number against 2010 (75,156).

The analysis shows that, at present, beyond the dynamics of the business in the technological sector, Romania is at the end of the European ranking regarding digitization and industrial robotics. The data of the European Commission places Romania 27th out of the 28 member states in the Indicator of economy and digital society (DESI)for 2019. The indicator shows the global digital performance in Europea and follows the progress in the EU countries as regards the digital competitivity.

The most performing countries in the EU in this domain are Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark, while Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Poland have to cover the gap.
