ANCOM: Tender for 5G to be initiated when starting prices are established by government decision and Memorandum with USA is applied

Starting prices for 5G tender, established by government decision and applying Memorandum with USA are hindering us from starting the tender for frequency bands tomorrow, said Cristin Popa, executive manager for Monitoring and Control within the National Authority for Management and Regulation in Communications (ANCOM).

ANCOM announced, on March 2, 2020, that until the end of quarter 3 it would complete documents for 5 G tender and the organization of the selection procedure for granting rights to use the radio spectrum available for 700MHz, 800 MHz, 1500MHz, 2600 MHz, 3400-3600 MHz (5G) frequencies for the supply of public  networks and broadband electronic communication services is scheduled for quarter 4,2020.

The US and Romanian governments, through ambassadors Hans Klemm and George Maior, signed a Memorandum on the development of 5G technology in Washington, on August 20, 2019. The document was sealed after being signed.

The Memorandum was made public in November 2019 and according to it, 5G network suppliers should be rigorously evaluated.

On January 29, 2020, the European Commission approved the joint set of instruments including attenuation measures established by member states to answer security risks concerning the introduction of 5G technologies , the fifth generation of mobile networks.

The European forum launched at the same time, relevant actions in its area of competence and made appeal that key measures be applied by April 30, 2020. Moreover, the Commission invited member states to elaborate, bu June 30, 2020, a joint report on the application of those measures in each country.

Official estimates show that 5G technology will generate incomes of 225 billion euros at world level in 2025.
