Border checkpoint with Ukraine to be reopened in September
The border checkpoint of Vicov between Romania and Ukraine, closed in 2010, will be reopened in 2010, Prime Minister Victor Ponta announced on Monday.
He explained that the step is beneficial to the Romanian community of Bucovina, a cross-border region in Romanian and Ukraine, because it will allow travelling from Cernauti (Ukraine) to Putna (northern Romania) without detours.
'I have recently travelled to Putna [a famous monastery], where representatives of the Romanian community in Cernauti also came; they told me that besides big words, we should reopen the Vicov border checkpoint, which was closed in 2010. So we will reopen it in September. Thus, I believe that besides big words, we also do little, yet concrete and important things to allow (people) to get from Cernauti to Putna without taking a 100 kilometres detour. I think sometimes these gestures are actually more important than pompous statements,' said Ponta.
He mentioned that this involves the same kind of policy as the one he promoted in the relations with the Republic of Moldova.
'For love symphonies, we had experts over the last 10 years,' the prime minister added.
