Chief of Defence Staff attending meetings of NATO and EU military committees Wednesday through Thursday

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Daniel Petrescu, will participate, on Wednesday and Thursday, in meetings of the NATO Military Committee in Chiefs of Defence Session (MCCS) and the European Union Military Committee (EUMC), in the format of defence chiefs, held at the headquarters of the two institutions in Brussels.

According to a press release issued by MApN, sent to AGERPRES, the MCCS agenda will cover issues of strategic importance to the Alliance at the present time. The defence chiefs of the 31 allied states, who will be joined as guests by the Swedish Chief of Defence Staff, will analyse the dynamics of the Russian Federation's war in Ukraine and will focus on the implementation of measures to strengthen the deterrence and defence posture, ahead of the decisions to be taken at the NATO Summit in Vilnius.

The EUMC agenda will include discussions on current challenges in the area of European security and defence and a review of the state of implementation of the "Strategic Compass" concept. EU Defence heads, together with military representatives of NATO structures, will also discuss ways to further support Ukraine. Another important topic of the meeting is the analysis of the participation of member and partner states in EU missions and operations, says the source.

NATO's Military Committee, made up of defence chiefs from allied states, is tasked with providing recommendations to the North Atlantic Council on how the Alliance can respond to global security challenges.

In turn, the EU Military Committee, the forum for the Common Security and Defence Policy, is made up of the heads of defence of the member states who, after harmonising national positions, propose courses of action for European security.
