CNO Gilday visits Constanta Naval Academy, military port and 'King Ferdinand' frigate

U.S. Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Michael Gilday, accompanied by Romanian Navy Chief of Staff, Vice Admiral Mihai Panait, visited on Friday the Constanta military port where they went on board the 'King Ferdinand' frigate for the presentation of the ship's missions and talks regarding the upgrade of Type 22 frigates, the Romanian Navy General Staff (SMFN) said in a release.

On the same day, the Romanian and American officials visited the 'Mircea cel Batran' Naval Academy and met with students and military personnel, on which occasion SMFN head Vice Admiral Mihai Panait presented the U.S. Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Michael Gilday, with the Navy Emblem of Honor.

The visit continued with a trip to the American base in Mihail Kogalniceanu for the final activity on the agenda, the meeting with the personnel of the U.S. 101st Airborne Division.

U.S. Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Michael Gilday, paid an official visit to Romania between January 19-20 in response to the invitation extended by the Romanian Navy Chief of Staff, Vice Admiral Mihai Panait.

The American and the Romanian senior military officials met on Thursday at the headquarters of the National Defense Ministry with Defense Minister Angel Tilvar and with the Deputy Chief of Defense Staff, Lieutenant-General Gheorghita Vlad, with whom they discussed topics such as the cooperation between the American and Romanian naval forces, joint training activities or the current security situation in the Black Sea region and NATO's eastern flank.

"Admiral Michael Gilday's visit to Romania is the third such activity carried out by the U.S. Navy's Command, after the visits of the Chiefs of Naval Operations, Admiral Michael G. Mullen in November 2006, and Admiral Jonathan W. Greenert, respectively, in November 2014," the SMFN release states.
