Comarnic-Brasov motorway to be opened in 2017, to cost 1.8 bln euros

The works at the motorway section between Comarnic and Brasov (central Romania) will be completed by 2017 at the latest, and the estimate costs are amounting to 1.8 billion euros, equivalent to 28 million euros per kilometer, Prime Minister Victor Ponta said at a press conference on Thursday.

According to him, the Memorandum signed by Romanian authorities and representatives of the Vistrada Nord Association, winner of the tender for the works at the Comarnic-Brasov section, stipulates that the contract must be signed before April 20, and the works must start before the end of April.

'Practically, the stage of consortium selection procedures has been completed. The winner is the Vistrada consortium. Currently, negotiations are in progress with commercial banks for the financing of the project. Normally, by April 20 we should be able to actually sign the contract and to open the construction sites both in Comarnic and in Cristian (central Romania, near Brasov). The motorway will have 53 kilometers, plus 7 kilometers of slip roads, to connect it to the Brasov beltway,' Ponta said.

The prime minister also mentioned that the toll will be set by the Romanian state and it is estimated at 5.7 lei (approximately 1.25 euros) plus VAT for the 60 km of the motorway.

On Thursday, representatives of the Vistrada Nord Association comprised of the Vinci, Strabag and Aktor companies, and Romanian authorities have signed a Memorandum for the completion of the schedule and of other measures for the awarding of the contract of public works concession concerning the design, construction, financing, operation, and maintenance of the Comarnic-Brasov section of the Bucharest-Brasov motorway.

On December 19, 2013, the selection of the future concessionaire of the Comarnic-Brasov motorway was completed; the association made up by Vinci (Italy), Strabag (Austria), and Aktor (Greece) has been chosen.

According to the Department for Infrastructure Projects and Foreign Investments, bids for the 'Public works concession contract for the design, construction, financing, operation, and maintenance of the Comarnic-Brasov section from km 110+600 to km 168+600 of the Bucharest-Brasov motorway' had been filed by the Vistrada Nord Association (Vinci/France, Strabag/Austria, and Aktor/Greece) and by the Impregilo SpA/Salini Association (Italy).

The motorway section will be operated and maintained by the concessionaire, and the warranty period is included in the concession contract.
