DefMin Tilvar and German counterpart agree to enhance cooperation in military training, defence industry area
National Defence Minister Angel Tilvar paid an official visit on Thursday and Friday to the Federal Republic of Germany, at the invitation extended by German Federal Minister of Defence Boris Pistorius.
According to a National Defence Ministry (MApN) release, the two Defence ministers had a consistent exchange of views regarding the complex security situation in the Black Sea area, the discussion focusing on the effects which Russia's aggression war against Ukraine causes at regional and global level. In this context, it was highlighted the importance of continuing the international support for Ukraine, while condemning the indiscriminate missile attacks on Ukrainian cities, which result in many victims among the civilian population.
The two officials also discussed the development of bilateral cooperation in the defence area and the allied and European security agenda, in the context of unprecedented security challenges, tackling the optimal ways to adapt to the current strategic realities.
"In respect to cooperation within NATO, I have conveyed to my counterpart our appreciation regarding Germany's constant contribution in implementing the deterrence and defence measures in the Black Sea region and I welcomed the participation of the German Air Forces in the enhanced air policing (eAP) missions in Romania. We agreed that it's paramount to continue the joint bilateral and multinational exercises, both in Romania and Germany and enhance cooperation in the training and defence industry area," minister Angel Tilvar stated.
The talks between the two ministers were also aimed at the cooperation at the European Union level, especially the initiatives in the defence area, Romania and Germany having similar standpoints in terms of the manner to strengthen the Security and Defence Policy of the European Union. In this context, it was highlighted the importance of capitalizing on the industrial collaboration opportunities under the European Defence Fund (EDF) aegis and joint procurements. The discussions also referred to the support for strengthening the resilience of the states located in the Eastern neighborhood.
The officials underscored the importance of signing the latest Joint Declaration regarding NATO-EU cooperation, on 10 January, a document that strengthens even more the strategic partnership between the two organizations.
According to the quoted source, the Romanian Defence minister thanked his German counterpart for the importance which Germany grants to the allied Eastern Flank, an aspect recently mentioned in the Joint Declaration of Germany and France signed on 22 January, on the occasion of celebrating 60 years since the signing of the Elysee Treaty.
Within the talks also highlighted was the good cooperation in areas such as military education, military history, openness for increasing the level of cooperation in the technical-military area and availability to resume political-military discussions, as an essential tool in identifying and implementing the practical cooperation activities.
The schedule of minister Angel Tilvar's visit to Berlin also included a meeting with German State Minister of the Federal Foreign Office Tobias Lindner.
The MApN release shows that minister Tilvar voiced appreciation for Germany's commitment to implement the deterrence and defence measures designed to the allied Eastern Flank, in particular, the Black Sea area, highlighting, in this context, the filling positions in multinational structures or participating in NATO air policing missions on Romanian soil.
The Romanian official also underscored the importance of continuing the joint bilateral and multinational exercises, with the benefit of increasing interoperability and confirming the mutual commitment, in the spirit of allied solidarity. He emphasized on the cooperation within the Framework Nations Group led by Germany, underscoring the commitment to continue efforts in terms of jointly developing capabilities. In a broader context, also highlighted was the interest to strengthen the cooperation projects within the EU.
Furthermore, the Romanian Defence minister stressed the importance of continuing the European Union's commitment (including through the European Peace Facility) and member states in ensuring a consistent support for the Republic of Moldova and Georgia, in view of increasing resilience and strengthen their pro-European course.
