Dragos Pislaru: We call on president Iohannis to demand use of Romania's veto right in the European Council

MEP Dragos Pislaru, co-chairman of REPER, called on president Klaus Iohannis "to put aside the games regarding his future career at the European level" and to use Romania's veto right in the European Council, arguing that our country's refusal regarding the accreditation of two officers Austrians in NATO represent, in fact, "a trap".

"I think that Romania has fallen into a trap, on the idea that the Schengen problem is a bilateral relationship with Austria. We said it, within REPER, and we say it again strongly - the problem we have now is a problem of the Council, not necessarily in the relationship with Austria. Austria has violated the European legislation. We must not beg Austria to stop violating the European legislation, we must ask the Council to take note of the fact that Austria has violated the European legislation and, beware, here is the most important thing, let us firmly ask President Iohannis to put aside his games regarding his future career at the European level and demand the use of Romania's veto right on the Council's decisions, at this moment we are ready to block the Council's decisions, until the Council takes a stand and puts pressure on Austria," Pislaru said, in Parliament.

According to him, the idea that Romania has "only a quarrel with the Austrians on Schengen is wrong".

"Romania is part of a European club, a European club in which Russia's influence should not be felt. In Austria, Russia's influence is felt and that is where this reaction of Austria comes from. The problem is European, it must be solved in the Council, with a firm president to use Romania's veto right," the MEP said.
