Easter sponge cake consumption is expected to be around 7.5 million

This Easter too Romania's sponge cake consumption is expected to be around 7.5 million, despite the 5 percent increase in the product's price compared to the same period last year, president of the Romanian Milling, Bakery and Pasta Industry Employers Organisation - ROMPAN, Aurel Popescu said.

According to him, this year too some 5 percent of the bakeries' total output of roughly 7.5 million sponge cakes will go to the Romanians who live abroad.

"We continue to export sponge cakes and Easter bread to the countries with Romanian communities, with most of the amount bound for Italy, Spain, Canada, but also England and Germany. About 5 percent of our production of about 7.5 million sponge cakes goes to export. The Romanian's taste is unchanged. He prefers the traditional sponge cake with nuts, raisins and cocoa, or a combination with Turkish delight and chocolate. He is not into anything spectacular," Popescu said.

The milling and bakery market rose to 3 billion euro, ranking first in the food industry.

There are 4,500 companies in the market, and ROMPAN, the first association established in Romania in 1990, includes over 300 companies from all the branches of the industry, accounting for 65 percent of the milling sector, 40 percent of the bread making business, 70 percent of the pasta and 55 percent of the biscuits market.
