The pay difference between men and women in Romania is 9.7 per cent, below the European average of 16.4 per cent, show European Commission (EC) statistics released on Friday on the occasion of the European Equal Pay Day, celebrated on February 28.

According to the EC, in Romania the difference between male and female earnings is decreasing, after two consecutive salary rises of 1.4 per cent and 2.2 per cent were registered in 2010 and 2011, respectively.

The average difference between men and women's hourly earnings in the entire European Union in 2013 stood at 16.4 per cent, a level that remained almost unchanged over the past few years.
