ENROLLED POPULATION WAS 3,495.8 THOUSAND PERSONS IN THE 2021-2022 SCHOOL/ACADEMIC YEAR

Enrolled population within the national education system was 3,495.8 thou pupils and students 1 in the school/academic year 2021-2022, showing a 1.2 thou increase as against the previous school/academic year.

Enrolled population increased compared to the previous school/academic year in what concerns the early childhood and pre-primary education (+3.3%) and the lower secondary education (+1.3%), respectively.

The 2020-2021 school/academic year’s graduates counted 476.6 thou pupils and students, decreasing by 7.5% as compared to the previous school/academic year.

 

Persons enrolled in the 2021-2022 school/ academic year

 

Almost half of the enrolled population was enrolled in primary and lower secondary education (46.1%) during the 2021-2022 school/academic year and about one third in the upper secondary education and early childhood and pre-primary education (17.1% and 15.4% respectively), show data from the National Institute of Statistics.

 

Of the total enrolled population within the national education system, 50.3% were females and 72.8% studied in urban areas. As against the previous school/academic year, lower secondary education, early childhood, preprimary education levels registered increases in terms of the enrolled population, respectively (+20.5 thou pupils, +17.0 thou children, respectively). Post-secondary non-tertiary education recorded 89.5 thou pupils enrolled, thus becoming the least representative educational level in total enrolled population (2.6%).

 

Upper secondary education (-22.8 thou pupils), tertiary education (-6.5 thou students) as well as vocational education (-4,7 thou pupils) showed the sharpest declines in the number of pupils enrolled in the 2021-2022 school year, as compared to the previous one.

 

Most of the enrolled population (94.5%) were enrolled in public school units/institutions. By education level, the considerable share of pupils and students enrolled in private education institutions was recorded in post-secondary nontertiary education (49.5%).

 

Enrolment rate of pupils in the 6-10 age group was the highest (89.0%), as compared to that in the remaining age groups.

In the 2021-2022 academic year, 554.0 thou students were enrolled in tertiary education, of which 55.5% were females. The most attractive fields of study (as per the ISCED-F classification) in tertiary education were represented by the business, administration and law group (24.6% of total students), and engineering, processing and construction group (19.4% of total students).

 

The education units/institutions network operating in the 2021-2022 school/academic year mainly pertained to the primary and lower secondary level (57.0%), upper secondary level (20.8%), and early childhood and pre-primary education level (17.4%), respectively.

 

At territorial level, enrolled population in the 2021-2022 school/academic year registered the highest values in the North-East region (598.4 thou persons) and in Bucharest-Ilfov region (532.7 thou persons), respectively. Enrolled population distribution by development regions and education levels in total of each region shows that primary and lower secondary education in South-Muntenia recorded the highest share (54.7%).

 

By contrast, post-secondary non-tertiary education registered the lowest shares in Centre and Bucharest-Ilfov regions (1.9% each). Share of tertiary education students in the total of each region registered the highest values in Bucharest-Ilfov (33.1%).

 

Teaching staff in the 2021-2022 school/ academic year

 

National education system’s teaching staff counted 237.9 thou persons in the 2021-2022 school/academic year. Thus, the average ratio between enrolled population and the number of teachers was of 15 pupils and students per teacher.

 

The female teachers held a majority share both in the pre-university educational system (82.4%) and in each of the following education levels: early childhood and pre-primary education (99.7%), primary and lower secondary (81.5%), post-secondary non-tertiary (79.1%), upper secondary (72.7%) and vocational (66.9%).

 

Graduates of the 2020-2021 school/academic year

 

The 2020-2021 school/academic year’s graduates of lower secondary, upper secondary, post-secondary non-tertiary education, and tertiary education levels (BA, MA, PhD) counted 476.6 thou persons.

 

The majority of graduates were females (251.1 thou), standing for 52.7% of the total graduates. Of the total graduates, 85.1% completed an educational level in urban 2 areas, whilst the remaining were registered in rural areas.

 

At the end of the 2020-2021 school year, 143.0 thou pupils graduated the lower secondary education level, most of them graduating from school units in the North-East region (19.4%). Boys’ share (52.3%) outran that of girls, by 4.6 percentage points. In urban areas, the graduates represented 59.5% of the total lower secondary education graduates.

 

At territorial level, greater shares of graduates in rural areas education units were recorded in North-East and SouthMuntenia regions (52.6% and 52.1%, respectively). At the end of the 2020-2021 school year, 144.2 thou pupils graduated upper secondary education, by 2.6% lower than the previous school year. Most of the upper secondary education graduates (87.3%) attended full-time education classes.

 

Data on upper secondary graduates outline that about half of pupils attended the theoretical pathway classes (52.7% of total graduates), 38.7% attended technological pathway classes, and 8.6% were studying in vocational high schools.

 

The graduates who took the Baccalaureate exams counted 134.8 thou, of which 117.1 thou graduated the 2021 class (86.9%). Overall, 97.1 thou persons (72.0%) passed the Baccalaureate exams, of which 91.1 thou (77.8%) were 2021 class graduates.

 

Vocational education was graduated by 24.7 thou pupils, of which 97.2% were enrolled in public education establishments. Post-secondary non-tertiary education was graduated by 33.2 thou pupils, of which 58.8% were enrolled in public education units. Tertiary education degree graduates counted 131.5 thou students, of which female graduates represented 59.3%.

 

Most of the tertiary education degreeshows data from the National Institute of Statistics graduates studied business, administration and law (26.9%), engineering, processing and construction (17.7%), and health and welfare (11.2%).

 

The dropout rate in the 2020/2021 school year was of 1.7% in upper secondary and vocational education, 1.3% in primary education, and 1.0% in lower education. In 2019 3 , financial resources necessary for carrying out the education process and allocated for the functioning of the national education system units were provided mostly (96.7%) from public funding (from the state budget and the local budgets); the rest originated from other educational institutions sources, and also from households’ incomes.

 

By public and private institutions expenses type, the greatest share of the total education-related expenses was held by current expenses (93.7%), and the difference was represented by capital expenses (6.3%).
