European Commission, after adoption of the amendments to the Criminal Codes: We will analyze before deciding on future steps

The European Commission has reacted after the Chamber of Deputies adopted on Wednesday the amendments to the Criminal Codes.

We are aware of the vote on the amendments to the Criminal Codes that took place today in the Romanian Parliament. We will carefully study the adopted amendments before deciding on the steps to follow. We understand that the changes have not been promulgated and have not come into force, Christian Wigand, European Commission spokesperson, said for Digi24 TV private broadcaster.

He further reminded that the EC was very clear about its position on the rule of law in Romania. Romania has to return on the track of reforms. If this is not the case, the Commission will have to react quickly and use the means at its disposal, the spokesman said.

The toughest measure is the triggering of Article 7, which may lead to the loss of certain rights in the European Union, digi24.ro informs.

The lawmakers in the Chamber of Deputies voted on Wednesday the controversial amendments to the Criminal Codes, adopted earlier on Tuesday by the legal committee headed by Florin Iordache.
