Foreign Ministry will not acknowledge election in Crimea

The Foreign Ministry pointed out that Romania will not acknowledge the illegal annexation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the town of Sevastopol by the Russian Federation and therefore will not acknowledge the organization of elections in that area.

“The Foreign Ministry reiterates that Romania does not acknowledge the illegal annexation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and of the town of Sevastopol by the Russian Federation and, therefore, does not acknowledge the organization of elections on that territory, a stand shared by EU and its member states. The Ministry reasserts its support for the territorial sovereignty and integrity of Ukraine, within its internationally recognized boundaries,” the Ministry announced in a press release.

According to EFE news agency, about 1.5 million electors from Crimea were called for the first time on Sunday to elect the president of the Russian Federation, on the very day when the Ukrainian peninsula was annexed by Moscow four years ago.

On March 16, 2014, about 97% of Crimea inhabitants voted in favour of the annexation to Russia in a referendum which was not recognized by Ukraine or the international community.

Two days later, president Vladimir Putin signed the annexation of Crimea in an official ceremony at the Kremlin, a decision unanimously condemned by the Western world, which attracted economic sanctions from USA and EU.

According to AFP, France announced on Sunday, that it did not acknowledge the organization of Russian presidential elections in Crimea.
