ForMin Corlatean assures Germany ambassador gov't respects Court ruling

Romanian Foreign Minister Titus Corlatean assured German Ambassador in Bucharest Andreas von Mettenheim on Wednesday that the Government will respect the Constitutional Court ruling declaring the referendum on impeaching the president not valid and he also voiced hope Germany will maintain its support for Romania's Schengen Area entry bid according to the set timescale.

Corlatean made the remarks during a meeting with von Mettenheim, who came on a courtesy visit, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a release to Agerpres.

'From the same perspective, the minister reiterated the commitments of Romania and of the Government to meet the recommendations made in the report of the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism of the European Commission, that should allow adopting an objective intermediate report before year-end', the release said.

'Also expressed was Romania's interest in joining Schengen Area, with the Romanian side voicing hope Germany will maintain its support in this respect, according to the French-German compromise and the previously agreed timescale, taking into account both the fact Romania has fully met the technical accession requirements and, among others, the lawfulness, constitutionality and democratic character of the July 29 referendum confirmed by the Constitutional Court ruling passed on August 21', the ministry stressed.
