How many billions of euro does Romania lose due to the brain drain

Romania lost between 40 and 50 billion euro due to the 3.5 million Romanians who left the country in the last 35 years, said Dragos Rosca, CEO of the investment fund Gemisa Investment" We lost Jews, Germans, Romanians, doctors, artists, the majority young who left to other countries. Each citizen with high school education costs 10,000 euro in the value of today and for one with university educaiton, the costs go up to 20,000 euro. These Romanians went to Spain, Italy, Germay, the US and Canada, Israel. And today we try to gather some billion euro from the European Union. We are not capable to influence the government to take measures to act. The issue of the work force is the issue which contemplate and it will be the same in 20 years if we don't change anything",Dragos Rosca said, CEO of Gemisa International, in a conference organised by Romanian Business Leaders (RBL).

In his turn, the chairman of the medical college of Romania, prof.univ.dr.Vasile Astarastoaie, stated that a number of 11,200 doctors left Romania over the last five years, appreciating that the exodus of Romanian doctors took a " worrying tendency".According to him, between 2007- 2012 there were 8,600 specialised doctors formed, and during the same interval 11,200 doctors left Romania.

He said that Romania " lost " approximately three billion lei only on education expenses for these doctors.

Astarastoae stated that they got to some hospitals to have no specialist in a certain domain.

"Due to the conditions in Romania, the exodus of Romanian doctors took a worrying tendency" the CMR chairman said, showing that as regards this phenomenon " we are unique in Europe".

Astarastoae said that among the reasons which are at the basis of the doctors'leaving Romania are the blaming of the doctors and the lack of respect for this professional category, the low income of doctors, the excessive politization of the healthcare system which does not alow the achievement or the development of a professional career, the fear of malprazis as the doctors have to "improvise from one day to another" as they lack the equipment or the medicine for the treatment.
