Ioan Mircea Pascu: Geoana went to US for support to position of NATO general secretary
European deputy Ioan Mircea Pascu declared on Tuesday, for Mediafax, that Mircea Geoana is “definitely” a viable candidate for the position of NATO general secretary, because he was foreign minister and the recent tour to the US had in view obtaining support for that.
“Mr. Geoana is definitely a candidate, since he used to be Romania’s foreign minister. He made a tour to the US hoping to get support there,” Pascu, a former defense minister in 2000-2004, declared.
He showed that the position of NATO general secretary is usually granted to a foreign or defense minister, former or present, who had a positive contribution to the Alliance. Geoana is a good candidate because he also has a European profile.
According to the Social-Democrat European deputy, there are chances for an East European to get the position held by Danish premier Anders Fogh Rasmussen until the end of 2012.On the other hand Pascu considers that it is less probable that both positions of general secretary and deputy general secretary be held by Romania and Poland, the other East European country in which there are talks in this respect, the most plausible candidate being Radoslaw Sikorski, the Polish foreign minister.
Pascu pointed out that Romania’s candidate should be supported by both government and presidency in order to have chances in getting the position.
European MP Norica Nicolai, liberal executive deputy chairman, said on Tuesday that chances for Romania to obtain the position of NATO general secretary are “small and symbolical” and it is more likely to get the position of NATO deputy secretary general.
A week ago, PSD senator Mircea Geoana told Mediafax that in his recent visit to the US he pleaded that the position of NATO general secretary should be granted to one of new NATO members. The Romanian press published information about Geoana’s candidacy to the position of NATO general secretary.
Damon Wilson, executive vice-president of the Atlantic Council wrote that Mircea Geoana is “a credible candidate for the position of NATO general secretary.”
