Iurie Leanca: The Republic of Moldova is not ready to get united to Romania

The Republic of Moldova is not ready to get united to Romania and prefers to get integrated into the European Union, stated on Friday the Moldova premier Iurie Leanca, at the summit of the Eastern Partnership in Vilnius. “No, as we establish concrete tasks as regards Moldova’s accession to the EU”Leanca answered for RIA Novosti when he was asked if a union was possible between the two states.

“Then when we will be a member state, we will be part of an common economic and commercial area. There will not be any internal frontiers. This is the objective we aim at’ the Moldova premier said. This position is opposed to that of Romania, which wants the union with the Republic of Moldova. The Romanian president Traian Basescu stated in Vilnius that the union with the Republic of Moldova is one of the priorities of foreign policy in Bucharest.

President Traian Basescu stated on Wednesday night for TVR that the following project for Romania is the union of the whole country, mentioning that he is convinced that if in the Republic of Moldova there is a unionist current, then Romania will be ready. “A people, when they have the occasion to be together, they will not give up. I don’t count on the politicians, the whole action connected to the Republic of Moldova was connected to the idea that we could be united, I know it is not the right moment, but (..) this will happen as blood is thicker than water’the president said.

Asked if he consulted with the Romanian diplomacy, Traian Basescu said that ‘the one who should give direction in foreign policy is me. Do you think that Mr.Corlatean does not want the union with the Republic of Moldova?”

Ponta: we must be intelligent and not mess up the Moldova people with stupid statements

The Romanian authorities have the obligation to help the citizens of the Republic of Moldova in the process of European integration and not mess them up with stupid statements on TV which could help Vladimir Voronin to win the elections in Moldova next autumn, premier Victor Ponta said.

“I am happy that the Republic of Moldova made a decisive step to Europe. Now, we have the obligation to help them and not to confuse them, namely we should not help Voronin, or those who want to keep Moldova away from Europe, we should be intelligent, we should not think of short term interests, as it is nice to be seen on TV speaking about I do not know what. So, we have to assist them with technical assistance, with infrastructure projects, with political support they had unconditionally, but, the step made by Moldova in Vilnius is a huge step and we have to be very intelligent and smart in supporting them with this road not to be stopped at the next elections. If we keep giving stupid statements, we could help Voronin to win the elections and ruin everything was good’Ponta said.

Corlatean about Basescu's statement referring to union with Moldova: Such statements risk causing damage

Foreign Affairs Minister, Titus Corlatean, believes that such statements as the one made by Traian Basescu regarding the union between Romania and the Republic of Moldova risk causing much damage.

According to him, there is a 'tenacious' effort made in order to help advance the process for 'the brothers on the other side of the Prut River to be able to return home, to the European family'.

'In moments like this, such statements risk causing damage in the West, by offering pretexts, and also in the East, inside the Republic of Moldova, by offering pretexts to communists, and they won't do any good in fact to any of those who want the Republic of Moldova to walk straight to EU and Romania [...] Whenever one has an objective to meet, it's better not to play with words, nor with peoples' feelings, and just do what it has to be done', said Corlatean.

The head of the Romanian diplomacy stated that, when discussing a projects that has to do with Romania, while also including the ‘brotherly relation' with the Republic of Moldova, it would have been better for the head of the state not to do it on TV.

'We, the others, the political parties, the Prime Ministers, the Speakers of the two Chambers of the Romanian Parliament, the Foreign Affairs Minister, we should not find about something like this from the TV. These things need to be discussed. In a democratic society, when approaching a major project for the country like this, one has to discuss it first at the table with everyone else', Corlateanu said.

He pointed out that in such situations mistakes should be avoided as much as possible, especially in such important moments, in the context of the upcoming Summit in Vilnius.

'It is natural for brothers to want - brother that were separated by war against their will - to be together, in one way or the other. This is only natural. But, in order for this to happen, one must avoid making mistakes, for these types of mistakes as I noticed - it may be a coincidence or maybe not - appear precisely in such important moments. They happened in other situations and they happen now before the decision to be taken in Vilnius', showed the Romanian Minister.

He underscored that another important moment for Chisinau will be the one following the sealing of the Association Agreement in Vilnius, because the Agreement will have to be signed in due time too.

President Traian Basescu on Wednesday states that the union between Romania and Moldova should become the third ‘fundamental project' of Romania, after entering the NATO and the EU.
