Liviu Dragnea: We need 10.6 billion euro to bring water and sewerage to all Romanian villages

Communes and villages in Romania need 10.6 billion euro to be connected to the water and sewerage network, said Liviu Dragnea, the minister of regional development on Thursday. He showed that 70% of rural localities have water and only 22% have sewerage.

The minister says that only 1.7 billion euro from European funds can be accessed from the 10.6 billion euro needed to extend the water and sewerage network to the rural area. The rest of the amount has to be allocated from the state budget or from credits.

Water and sewerage networks cannot be financed from funds of the Regional Operational Program. The financing sources from European funds over 2014-2020 for water and sewerage works in the rural area can be the National Program for Rural Development where 0.4 billion euro can be accessed and POS Environment where 1.3 billion euro can be available. The rest of the money must come from the state budget as a commune cannot get a credit of a few million euro for water and sewerage. No bank will grant such a credit,” Liviu Dragnea said.

He declared that in case 300 million lei a year could be allocated through the National Local Development Program, as PDL thinks, we would have water and sewerage networks in all villages and communes in Romania in the year 2146.

According to Eurostat, Romania ranks last in EU for the share of people connected to the public water and sewerage system.
