MAE confirms: Russia declares Romanian diplomat persona non grata

The Romanian ambassador in Moscow, Cristian Istrate, was summoned on Wednesday to the Russian Foreign Ministry where he was handed a note saying that a staff member of the local Romanian Embassy had been declared persona non grata. The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) confirmed the information.

This measure is said to be a response to a previous unmotivated decision of Romania to declare persona non grata a diplomat of the Russian Embassy in Bucharest, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Romania deems "unfounded" Russia's recent decision to declare a Romanian diplomat persona non grata.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirms that the Russian Federation has declared a member of the Romanian Embassy in Moscow persona non grata. This decision of Russia is unfounded in relation to the provisions of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and comes in response to measures taken by Romania on May 24, 2024 to declare persona non grata in the country a diplomat of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Bucharest," according to Romania's Foreign Ministry (MAE).

MAE added that Romania's decision regarded a Russian diplomat who was carrying out activities that violated the provisions of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

MAE on May 24 reported that Romania decided to declare persona non grata in the country a diplomat from the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Bucharest for activities that violate the provisions of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

"These details were communicated to the Russian party today, May 24, 2024, during a summons to the MAE headquarters, at the order of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Luminita Odobescu, of the chargé d'affaires ad interim of the Russian Federation in Bucharest," the MAE said at the time.
