Over half of Romanian SMEs still run Windows XP and are exposed to security risks (study)

Over half of the Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises of Romania which still run Windows XP operating system on their computers expose themselves to significant security risks month by month, Bitdefender specialists draw the attention in a recently published study.

Locally, the company most exposed to hacker attacks lately works in the financial services industry, but the study authors did not provide any additional details.

According to the cited source, approximately 57 per cent of the computers used in the SMEs of Romania are exposed to some major security risks, being equipped with Windows XP even after Microsoft ceased providing technical assistance for this operating system.

The specialists' analysis shows that worldwide the most threatened company in terms of information attacks is a web marketing company, which was confronted with approximately 800 million malware attacks in the period the study was carried out. Moreover, this SMEs ranking includes a company in the metallurgic industry in the US, a logistics company in the UK, an architecture college in Spain, an Irish retail company and a fruit and vegetable hypermarket in Australia.

The Bitdefender study was carried out in the period March - April 2014 and took into account 5,000 companies from industries such as retail, health, education and industrial systems.

The countries where interviews on this topic were conducted were Romania, USA, UK, Australia, Germany, Spain and Brazil, but the world average share of Windows XP use stands at 18 per cent, significantly lower than that of Romania.
