Parliament sends Defense Ministry preliminary approval decision for purchase of 44 amphibious assault vehicles
The standing bureaus of the two Chambers of the Parliament decided, on Tuesday, to send the Ministry of National Defense (MApN) the preliminary approval decision for the initiation of the procedure for awarding the purchase contracts for 44 amphibious assault vehicles type AAV-7.
The MApN requested that Parliament grant, in line with legal procedures, the preliminary approval to start the procedures for awarding the purchase contract for the 44 amphibious assault vehicles type AAV-7, and the Parliamentary Defense Committees decided on October 1 to approve this request.
"Through the Decision of the Country's Supreme Defense Council No. S-82 of May 16, 2024, the Memorandum regarding the addition of amphibious assault vehicles type AAV-7 was approved. (...) According to the request, in order to implement the Endowment Plan of the Romanian Army, the Ministry of National Defense continues the steps for the acquisition of new military hardware that will contribute to the modernization of the army and the improvement of operational capabilities, having as its essential objective the fulfillment of its missions and obligations", reads the address to the parliamentary defense committees, sent to the joint standing bureaus.
At the same time, the endowment with military hardware for the creation of flexible force structures, with means to ensure survival in the tactical field, with mobility and extended situational knowledge and increased firepower has in view the operationalization of the capability targets assumed within the NATO process and EU defense planning for the achievement of the objectives of the Program related to the transformation of the Army until the year 2040, the document reads.
According to the quoted source, the program consists in the acquisition of 44 amphibious assault vehicles type AAV-7 from the inventory of the United States Marine Corps, through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) security assistance program. The value of the presented purchase contract was estimated at 270 million dollars, without VAT, based on the supporting data collected, the exact value to be determined after the purchase procedure.
