Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said on Tuesday that offshore gas extraction in the Black Sea is turning Romania into the largest gas producer in the European Union, and thanked representatives of Romgaz and OMV Petrom for keeping to the project timetable.

"Yesterday, Romgaz and OMV Petrom completed the installation of the production platform for natural gas extraction in the Black Sea, the largest natural gas project in Romania. The platform's supporting structure has been installed and secured on the seabed. It has a total height of more than 220 metres and weighs over 16,000 tonnes, having been transported and installed using specialised vessels over recent months. The installation of the platform and the 160-kilometre pipeline connecting it to the shore are the essential stages of the project. Work will continue in the coming months with the completion of all connections and will conclude with the testing of the facilities, so that gas extraction can begin next year," Ilie Bolojan wrote in a Facebook post.

He stressed that Black Sea gas extraction is a strategic energy project for Romania.

"The new gas volumes will enable industrial recovery, ensure fertiliser supplies for agriculture from domestic production (the Azomures plant), under favourable conditions for farmers, and provide the gas needed for household consumption at a stable price in the coming years. Black Sea gas extraction is transforming Romania into a relevant player in ensuring energy security in the region and into the largest gas producer in the European Union. I thank the project teams of the two companies for keeping to the work schedule," Bolojan added. (Photo:https://www.facebook.com/ilie.bolojan)
