PM Ponta: If President fails his duty, someone must state Romania's position on Syria

Prime Minister Victor Ponta, co-chairman of the USL ruling coalition, said on Monday that if the head of the state 'fails his duty' of taking a stance on the situation in Syria, he must do it, because someone has to express Romania's stance on this subject.

'I have been avoiding and avoid polemics, Mr. Basescu is free to swear at me, call me whatever he wants, I won't retort. On the other hand, when it comes to important subjects, I have to come out to express on Romania's behalf the unwavering and unequivocal condemnation of the current Syrian government. It's obvious crimes against humanity have been perpetrated by the use of chemical weapons and it's clear we can no longer beat around the bush and pretend we didn't see or didn't know about it. Of course, the UN experts will present concrete evidence and it's obvious that Romania does not take standalone action, but according to what the U.S. Congress will decide, we will also have a position of action. But avoiding to say something all humankind has done would be a sign of cowardice or even of corruption - not to have the guts to state publicly what Romania's position is towards what happened in Syria. If Mr. President doesn't do it, ask him why he doesn't,' the Prime Minister told a press conference held at the USL headquarters.

President Basescu: Romania keeps its lines of cautious foreign policy against an intervention in Syria

President Traian Basescu stated on Monday that Romania keeps its cautious foreign policy against an intervention in Syria and solidarity with the allies if they decide o it, maintaining several scenarios.

‘We keep our foreign policy line, caution against an intervention in force in Syria and solidarity with our allies, if they take that decision’ Basescu said, in an interview for ‘Adevarul’.

He added that Romania will not be consulted in case of ‘ a military surgical ‘ intervention of US in Syria as it does not have the military capability for such intervention and added that this is a huge issue which leads to caution. ‘ The issue is what happens in case the ‘military surgical intervention of the US ? Will Damascus react or not? In my opinion, they are going to react’, Basescu said.

He mentioned several scenarios, saying that he has to take into consideration what is worse. One of the scenarios would be in the case of the fall of the Bashad alAssad, what it will be replaced with and what happens with Russia’s influence once the regime is changed, following a war.

‘There is Russia, with its only military base in the Eastern Meditteranean, let’s suppose the fall of Bashad al-Assad will generate the loss of this base. Where will the Russian Federation compensate the loss of its prestige? After Kosovo, they compensated in Georgia, what would be more convenient? Transdniester. The things are more complicated and I don’t like childish statements. Especially those coming from unauthorised people. I have offered a scenario, you are obliged to take the worst of it’ Basescu said.
