President Iohannis: Decision to open schools is not easy, but necessary

President Klaus Iohannis on Wednesday stated that, although the decision to open schools is not easy to take, it is "a correct and necessary" one.

"As you know, schools start on September 14 under completely different circumstances from previous years. At the moment, we have only a few settlements where education will resume exclusively virtually, while in others it will take place in a hybrid system, depending on the epidemiological situation and the existing logistics. The central and local administrations, and also the managements of the schools, have implemented a series of procedures to contain the risk of COVID-19 being spread in the school community. But their effectiveness largely depends on collaboration among teachers, parents and, of course, students. We cannot reduce the risk of infection to zero, but at the same time it is very important to realise that by following the basic rules everyone contributes to the safety of the whole community. Limiting access to education has major negative consequences for the younger generations and affects the future of all of us, so the decision to re-open schools, although not an easy one, is correct and necessary," Iohannis told a news conference at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace.

He added that "quality education must remain a priority" even if we face a health crisis.

"Last but not least, I would like to address parents, who are naturally worried and concerned about how things will turn out from September 14. I am encouraging you to send your children to school and explain to them that for a time school will be different, but if we all follow the rules, we will overcome this situation well," said Iohannis.
