President Iohannis: We will continue to stand by Ukraine as long as it takes

President Klaus Iohannis sent his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky a congratulatory letter on the anniversary of Ukraine's Independence Day, congratulating the Ukrainian people both personally and on behalf of the Romanian people, the Presidential Administration informs.

Iohannis praised the "courage" shown by the Ukrainian people in defending its independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of the Russian aggression.

"We will continue to stand by your country as long as it takes, until the victory against the aggression, the liberation of the entire territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders and further, in the process of the country's restoration and reconstruction," President Iohannis wrote in the letter addressed to Zelensky.

According to the Romanian head of state, through the war of aggression it unleashed, the Russian Federation "gravely and repeatedly" violated all the principles of international law and caused "immense suffering", and its intensified attacks on the Ukrainian civil infrastructure, with significant loss of human lives and extensive destruction "represent new war crimes".

Also, the president reiterated that Russia's recent decision to suspend its participation in the Black Sea Grain Initiative shows "a reprehensible indifference to the food security of the most vulnerable countries" on a global level.

Iohannis expressed his confidence that the relations between Romania and Ukraine will develop in the spirit of European and Euro-Atlantic principles and for the benefit of all citizens, including the people belonging to the Romanian minority in Ukraine.

To honor Ukraine's Independence Day, the Cotroceni Palace will be illuminated on Thursday evening in the colors of the Ukrainian flag.
