Prime Minister Ponta met European Commissioner for Internal Market and Services

Prime Minister Victor Ponta on Friday had a meeting with the European Commissioner for the Internal Market and Services, Michel Barnier, discussions focusing on the digital agenda, services market, the Banking Union, the facilitation of access to regulated professions.

'The Commissioner Barnier's visit to Romania is part of a series of visits of European officials to Bucharest this autumn that reflect the continuous dialogue between the Romanian authorities and the institutions in Brussels and, especially, the European Commission. Discussions focused on such issues of an European interest, especially such issues of interest for Romania that were related to the Commissioner's field of activity, among which the digital agenda, the services market, the Banking Union, the facilitation of access to the regulated professions and the European professional framework', informed the Executive in a release.

According to the abovementioned source, Victor Ponta hailed the interest and appreciation shown by Commissioner Barnier related to the manner in which Romania understands to fulfill its commitments in reaching the objectives of the single market, which constitutes an essential political challenge in Europe in the current global economic context. Moreover, the Prime Minister underscored that what is important at the EU level is that efforts be focused on such sectors of activity with the biggest economic growth potential.

'The head of the Romanian Executive said he supported the digital agenda and the important role played by the development of infrastructure for digital services and of the infrastructure for the high-speed internet have in increasing competitiveness. A durable digital society should be based on the improvement of the digital literacy (eSkills) of the European citizens, on efficient e-governing services and healthcare informatization, by using technological solutions to ensure the development and improvement of such competencies. With respect to public acquisitions, the Prime Minister appreciated the constant support of the Commission and highlighted that the government will prepare very carefully for the implementation of the legislative package to reform the EU, as soon as it is formally adopted', the release also said.
